6 MERCED SUN-STAR November 21, 1946 Page MERCED AGRICULTURIST FARM TRACTOR OF TOMORROW Looking into the future of the farm tractor, R. R. Parks, agricultural engineer of the Agricultural Extension service, gives a brief picture of improvements already on the way. "The hydraulic drawbar lift has demonstrated its worth for one man attachment and operation of tools," says Parks. "The only thing missing in this connection is a power lift in front for raising and lowering tools or carrying materials such as sprays or fumigants.

"For some farm operations in California, there would be an advantage if the tractor ran backward in four gears instead of forward, in order to give the operator better vision and control of the tool being used. This principal is already applied to road machinery. "New farm practices in California emphasize the need for revamping the old tractor. The application of soil fumigants and flame cultivation require that quantities of materials be transported with the operation. In as much as the tool logically should be attached to the drawbar, either front or rear, a carrying shelf is needed to transport the material.

"More attention will be given in the new tractors to placing the operator where he can have a better view of the work he is doing and have more facilities for attaching tools to the tractor and operating them from the power plant." CAUTION TO NEWCOMERS Many inquiries from veterans and others interested in establishing themselves on California farms are coming to the Agricultural Extension service. A considerable number are newcomers to the state wanting to settle here because of the climate and general high plane of living. Although some have adequate capital, many others have hopes which exceed their resources. Some buy without adequate investigation and then find their farm too small or too poor to provide the income expected. The college of agriculture of the University of California has a free publication designed to help those hoping to enter farming in this state.

This bulletin, "Farming in California for the Newcomer," was written by Arthur Shultis, specialist in farm management of the Agricultural Extension service. Shultis urges great caution where indebtedness is incurred at recent high farm values. Land values in California reached an all-time high in March 1946 at 219 per cent of the 1912 to 1914 level, compared 140 per cent for the United States. The bulletin may be obtained through the local office of the Agricultural Extension Service, County Adobe 22nd and streets, Merced. BUMPER COTTON CROP IN CALIFORNIA The highest per-acre cotton production for California since the record yield of 1940 is predicted for 1946 by the California Crop and Livestock service.

November 1 reports indicate a production of 603 pounds of lint per harvested acre. This exceeds by 19 pounds the average production per acre for the past 10 years. Relative earliness of the crop, favorable weather, and an adequate supply of picking labor were factors which favored the 1946 yield. The total al California crop for this year is now estimated at 450,000 bales, compared with 000 bales in 1945. The national crop is the smallest since 1921.

PLAN FOR CONTROL OF SWINE BRUCELLOSIS A satisfactory procedure for controlling brucellosis in swine is suggested by Dr. Kenneth G. Mc Kay, specialist in veterinary science of the Agricultural Extension service. Blood-test the entire herd. Samples should be taken and tested by qualified persons.

If infection is present, consider the entire breeding unit is infected. Raise the pigs the infected brood stock. Blood and segregate the pigs from the sows at weaning time. Then place the pigs in clean pens. Maintain this segregation until the infested stock is all eliminated.

At this point the blood testing can be confined to the gilts and boars intended for replacement in the herd. If reactors appear, remove them. Breed only negative gilts to clean boars. GROWERS USE MORE NITROGEN Use of nitrogen fertilizers in orchards is now standard practice for peaches, walnuts, plums, and it common practice for almonds, prunes, cherries, olives, and grapes. The general average of amounts of nitrogen has increased.

Formerly around 100 pounds per acre was used on deciduous orchards on a straight nitrogen basis. Now many growers are using 150 pounds of nitrogen per acre and a few up to 200 pounds. Results have ben generally good in the warm interior, but there is some danger of too many applications injuring quality, especially in the cooler districts. Normally nitrogen improves fruit quality, but in a few cases excessive applications may cause serious delay in ripening, poor color, and soft texture. FREEZING POULTRY FOR HOME USE Many questions about freezing poultry for home use are explained in a new leaflet of the Agricultural Extension service just off the University of California press.

Preparing the poultry, wrapping it for storage, freezing and storing are subjects discussed and illustrated in the new leaflet. It may be had free at the Agricultural Extension Service, County Adobe Building, 22nd and streets, Merced.
